THE COMMISSION OF A WORK OF ART
PORTRAITS, NARRATIVES, BIBLICAL THEMES, STILL LIVES & LANDSCAPES
On portrait commissions:
»Painting a portrait commission, to me, is about more than just capturing my sitter’s physical likeness. I earnestly want to get to know the person I am painting, so the picture can speak to who they are on a deeper level.«
It would be my pleasure to paint your portrait. Usually my portraits are exactly or just under life-size oil paintings on Dutch or Belgian linen or alternatively slightly smaller drawings in pencil or charcoal on hand-prepared paper. If you are living a busy lifestyle, I would be willing to work from photographic reference material instead of following the more traditional approach, which is to paint directly from life. In this case we would take a series of reference photographs either at my studio in Florence or directly at your home. If neither is possible I am willing to work from photographic reference material provided by you, though heavily depending on its quality and the visual information it provides.
Once we have figured out how and where to gather our photographic reference material, we will decide about the clothing, the background, the potential inclusion of pets etc. and eventually go through the available photographs together to select the ones that are the most suitable for the commission.
It is important to me to include you in the creation of your portrait as much as possible, so I am happy to keep you up-to-date throughout the process, from the initial sketch all the way through to your final approval of the finished artwork. When the portrait is nearing completion, I will send you a photograph of the work and will potentially add some finishing touches upon your request, before the artwork will eventually be varnished and shipped to wherever you are in the world.
If you are interested in commissioning a painting or drawing, I would be delighted to receive an email inquiry from you.
