Drawing And Painting The Human Figure From Life

  • The Florence Art Studio Via Ghibellina, 121 50122 Firenze FI, Tuscany Italy (map)

Join me this summer, 22nd of May to 2nd of June, for my workshop on drawing and painting the human figure from life at The Florence Art Studio in Florence, Italy!

For millennia, the classical study of the human form has been at the heart of great artistic achievement in the field of realism. Through a series of exercises, participants of this workshop will receive an insight into the academic process of drawing and painting following the "sight-size" method. Immerse yourself in a technique originating from the studios of the historic École des Beaux Arts of 19th century Paris.

The first week will be structured to allow participants to assimilate the basic skills and steps required to resolve a successful drawing in pencil, with the additions of white chalk on toned paper. Core concepts include an introduction to materials, how to work in "sight-size", and an overview of technical concepts such as; line quality, form, rhythm, value, proportion, anatomy, and transferring a drawing onto canvas.

The second week will be dedicated to the realization of a "bozzetto", an oil painting dedicated to the study of value, colour and three-dimensional form. The students will transfer their drawing achieved in the first week onto canvas, making the "block-in" of the colour and values as accessible as possible. The exercises of this week shall cover basic color theory, paint handling, mediums, how to mix a flesh tone palette and how to interpret nature in a way that makes for a well-composed work of art.

At the end of this two-week workshop, students will leave with a resolved drawing and painting. The main aim is to equip all students with an enriched knowledge of materials and concepts that they can bring home to their own private practice.

This workshop will be conducted at The Florence Art Studio in Florence, Italy. Classes will be held from Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 12 PM. Tuition is €1.500,-. Students are required to be equipped with their own materials, which can be acquired at a 10% discount from various art supply stores nearby the event location. A complete list of materials will be received upon enrollment.
