Painting The Portrait from Life

  • Studio Nikolas von Tiedemann 49 Via dei Servi Firenze, Toscana, 50122 Italien (map)

Join me this fall in my studio in the heart of Florence for my two week portrait painting workshop, from September 11th to 22nd!

A solid understanding of portraiture belongs in the toolbox of every artist in the figurative tradition. For centuries the painted portrait has been playing an important role in the historic documentation of personalities or served a more earnest and personal depiction of an individual soul. The act of painting a portrait from life is always an intensely human experience shared by the artist and their model.

The first week of the course will begin with an introduction to the academic approach to painting and an overview over the basic proportions of the human head. We will begin by sketching the portrait directly on the canvas and soon move onto laying in the portrait in oil paint. You will be guided through the process of mixing flesh colors with a palette knife on your palette and the use of media in painting. Layer by layer the portrait will come to life, so that by the end of the second week you will have created a portrait with an good likeness and full of life.

The aim of this workshop is to provide you with a short but intense insight into the entire process behind the creation of a portrait painted from life. By the time you return to your own studio and approach your personal work again, you shall be able to rely on the lessons learned during this workshop, so that you can confidently find the solutions to some of the technical challenges you might be facing in the future.

This workshop will take place in Florence, Italy. Classes will be held from Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 12 PM. There is a total of 4 spots available. Tuition is 1,200€. Students are required to be equipped with their own materials, which can be acquired at a 10% discount at various art supply stores nearby the event location. A complete list of materials will be received upon enrollment.
